I lift up my eyes to the hills

PSALM 121

I lift up my eyes to the hills -
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot slip -
He who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord watches over you -
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all harm -
He will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.

9th of MAY 1945. I remember...

The Soviet Banner of Victory on the Reichstag building in Berlin

9 May 1945. This day can never be forgotten....
The Great Patriotic War against Nazi Germany
came to an end.

This day means a lot to me. In the country where I come from, the World War II had an effect on almost every single family. There was almost no family or street in the whole USSR, where people would not have lost at least one family member or friend because of this war. Several years of constant grief and fear for loved ones. Sons, fathers, husbands, mothers, daughters, brothers, sisters..... The war as with any war was merciless.
In 1945 the Great Patriotic War (the portion of World War II from June 22, 1941, to May 9, 1945, against Nazi Germany and its allies in the Eastern Front) came to an end.
My grandfather was a Veteran of World War II, he was sent to war at the age of 17, and he bravely fought to defend his country.
It can never be forgotten what all the courageous soldiers had done for us during that time.

Here are some harrowing statistics of World War II, just to remind us of sacrifices that were made for us :
Estimates of total dead range from 50 million to over 70 million, making it the deadliest war ever.
Estimated USSR losses within postwar borders now stand at 26.6 million.
The German Army historian Dr. RĂ¼diger Overmans published a study in 2000 that estimated German military dead and missing at 5.3 million.
Casualties include about 4 to 12 million war-related famine deaths in China, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, India that are often omitted from other compilations of World War II casualties.
Jews: The Holocaust is the term generally used to describe the genocide of approximately six million European Jews during World War II, Martin Gilbert estimates 5.7 million (78%) of the 7.3 million Jews in German occupied Europe were Holocaust victims. Other estimates for Holocaust deaths range between 4.9 to 6.0 million Jews.

This is only the brief stats of this war, to read more, click on the link below.
